Girls Group Pilot

We have created a fully funded 8-week programme designed to be supportive, engaging and enjoyable. The sessions will be led by an arts therapist from Sycamore Counselling and will take place on Thursdays from 4:00pm–6:00pm at Hartshill Community Centre.
The aim of the programme is to help pupils feel more confident, reduce anxiety, and ensure they have the support they need during this important transition.

During the sessions, pupils will:

  • Take part in fun, activity-based sessions
  • Have opportunities to build confidence and friendships
  • Talk about any worries or concerns in a safe and supportive environment
  • Learn strategies to help manage anxiety and prepare for the move to secondary school

Across the eight sessions, children will take part in a range of enjoyable activities, including cake making, pottery, and jewellery making. Snacks and drinks will be available.

The programme will begin with an initial session on Thursday 9th July, followed by weekly sessions starting on Thursday 23rd July for seven weeks. The final session will take place on Thursday 3rd September.

Week 1

On the first week of the Girls Group the girls were gifted with different types of stationary, pens, highlighters, post-stick notes, note pads, etc and then I asked them to write down a funny joke or memory that they could think of then and then share with the group. I though this would be a good ice breaker for them, as although the children all attend the same school, they are not in the same friendship group and so this was also a good opportunity for them to come together and get to know one another a bit better.

The girls opted to go for a funny story/memory of something that happened to them and they all willingly shared with the rest of the group. We had some funny stories!

We then played some fun games such as musical statues, musical chairs, and then some of the girls had a race in the hall that we are based in. Most were extremely fast in the race and very competitive!

It was a fantastic first session and I could really see the girls become more comfortable with one another as the session went on, especially when they all opted to share their funny story with the group. I think it takes a lot of courage to be able to share this, especially with peers that are the same age as you. However, they all shared their memory with great confidence.

Week 2

For this session the girls were able to show their artistic side and created character of their choice, we had a range of Disney characters, fictional characters, and a food item.

The girls really enjoyed this and it really brought out their imagination and got them thinking of what they could create.

We spoke a lot about holidays as some of the girls had recently been on holiday and others had holidays to look forward. One of the girls was telling us that she is going to the Isle of Wight and then to Disneyland Paris to complete a dance competition! What an exciting few weeks that she has to look forward to.

Again, we had lovely feedback at the end of the sessions with the girls commenting how much they enjoyed attending and it was great to share more stories with them this week and hear about their upcoming events before they start their new chapter a high school.
